In the latest issue of The Edge newsletter, I have an article on some of the underlying best practices for effective communication between design and develop activities for projects.
Iterative processes are increasingly being used for projects, but having these carry over between design and development activities can be challenging. An iterative process can mean varying things for different disciplines, and this article introduces some of the basic concepts for adopting iterative workflows for design and development that keep all team members in sync and able to focus on the task at hand.
I intend to write more about this topic in the future, including some demonstrations on how you can adopt iterative processes with Adobe tools like Creative Suite 4, Flash Catalyst and Flex Builder “Gumbo”.

Hey Doug,
My name is Tom Miatke and I am a designer from Australia and have recently discovered the Adobe Flash Catalyst and being a Graphic Designer that knows very little about coding I think that this program will be perfect for mock-up and well refined projects. I had just one question about the program though, when a user imports a project from Photoshop or Illustrator can it be from CS3 or exclusively CS4… I am really hoping that we can use CS3 as I dont have CS4 yet.
Thanks for reading this
Tom Miatke
Some CS3 files can be imported into Flash Catalyst with varying fidelity — we recommend using CS4 to ensure better quality. However, to round-trip your designs (Make changes to them in Illustrator after they have been imported into Flash Catalyst) requires CS4.
