WorkflowLab Beta Preview: Custom Tools

January 4, 2010

wlBetaPreview01

The biggest request we got from the community was to have the ability to build a workflow using third party tools. With the alpha release, WorkflowLab was filled with dozens of Adobe tools that you could associated with the various phases, steps or tasks of your project workflow. The issue was that if you used other software like Microsoft Office, OmniPlan, web services, or other non-Adobe technology you were out of luck.

When we planned out the alpha release of WorkflowLab we always intended to have third-party application support, but we were unable to include it in the alpha version. With all of the great feedback we were able to adjust this feature to make it valuable for building and documenting workflows in the upcoming beta release.

Within WorkflowLab, alongside of the built-in Adobe tools, technologies and services, you can create you own custom list of resources for your workflow. This pool of resources are used for the project you are working on and can be associated with any of the workflow items in the project. To get started, you need to create a custom tool for your workflow. When you do this, you select a category that best matches your resource and then give it a custom name.

The categories of custom resources is where we took the ideas from the community and expanded them a bit. In addition to creating custom applications for your workflow, WorkflowLab also supports:

  • Web Service
  • Framework
  • API
  • Code Library
  • Class
  • Vendor
  • Resource
  • Person
  • Other

These categories make it easy to clearly define technologies, services, team members, and other resources that are integral to the completion of the project workflow. These custom resources are treated like any other and can help add valuable information to your workflow annotation and description.

The current release of WorkflowLab is available at Adobe Labs (http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/workflowlab) and uses Adobe AIR. Stay tuned for more upcoming features in WorkflowLab beta!

Nice improvements. This application is a pretty air showcase and a useful tool. :)
